The Ministry of Education’s Department of Schools, in cooperation with the Department of Examinations, Private Education Section and the Special Education Unit -- and in collaboration with University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) -- today organised The 2017 Outstanding Achievers’ Awards to highlight students’ excellent achievements in the Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (PSR), Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate and Brunei-Cambridge GCE ‘O’, ‘AS’ and ‘A’ level Examinations. Also presented was the Cambridge Outstanding Achiever’s Award (COAA). The event was held at the Chancellor Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Present at the ceremony were Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Amal Jefriah binti Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien and children -- of which one of them, a daughter of Yang Teramat Mulia’s, was the recipient of the 2017 Cambridge Outstanding Achiever’s Award.
Present as the Chief Guest at the event was Yang Berhormat, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman , Minister of Education. Yang Mulia, Datin Paduka Dr. Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd. Salleh, Deputy Minister of Education, was also present. A total of 298 recipients received their awards in the ceremony. Prize categories awarded were (i) Cambridge Outstanding Achiever Award, (ii) excellence in BC-GCE ‘O’ Level/IGSCE, (iii) excellence in BC-GCE ‘A’ Level/International Bachelorette, (iv) Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate, (v) excellence in Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (PSR), (vi) special awards from the Special Education Unit and (vii) Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) Award.

Students awarded Outstanding Achievers’ Awards received trophies and certificates from the Ministry of Education and cash with complementary prizes from Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam. Meanwhile, Cambridge Outstanding Achievers’ Awards recipients received trophies, certificates and prizes from the Department of Examinations and also Cambridge International Examination Board. The ceremony was aimed at the acknowledgment and appreciation of students who achieved academic excellence, particularly in national public assessment. It was also to motivate students to be more avid in striving for excellence in the future. At the same time the ceremony was to acknowledge parents, guardians and schools for initiatives towards the students’ achievements.
The ceremony began with the recital of Surah Al-fatihah and prayer led by Awang Mohd Iqbal Hibatullah@Hilal bin Mohd Rushidi -- a Year 11 student from Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Hasan, followed by a Quran Recital by Awang Muhammad Amirul Husaini bin Moksin -- also a Year 11 student from Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Hasan who was the winner of the national Tilawah Al-Quran for secondary schools and sixth form centres. The event programme then proceeded with a welcoming speech from the chairperson, Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Anis Faudzulani binti Haji Dzulkiflee, Acting Director General of Education, Ministry of Education. This was followed by was a speech from Cambridge International Examinations representative Mr Ng Kim Huat, the Country Director (for Malaysia and Brunei) from Cambridge Assessment International Education. The highlight of the event was the award presentations by Yang Berhormat Minister of Education.

Aziz, Vice Chancellor, Universiti Brunei Darussalam; Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, Rector, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali; Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice Chancellor, Universiti Teknologi Brunei; Yang Mulia Dr Chin Wei Keh, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Ministry of Education; Yang Mulia Haji Mohammad Yusri bin Haji Wahsalfelah, Head of Division, government relations and special projects, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD); Directors and Senior Officers of the Ministry of Education, School Leaders and the parents and guardians of students who received the awards.
