09 - 11 April 2019, Gadong - Yang Mulia Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin, Permanent Secretary (Core Education) Ministry of Education, cum Secretary General of the Brunei Darussalam National Commission to UNESCO, officially launched the Opening Ceremony of the Sub-Regional Meeting on Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) and the 2019 Annual Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Countries Report Meeting at the Red Jade Conference Ballroom, Centrepoint Hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan earlier today. Also present at the Opening Ceremony was Yang Berhormat Dayang Khairunnisa binti Awang Haji Ash'ari and Yang Berhormat Awang Iswandy bin Ahmad, Members of the Legislative Council of Brunei Darussalam.

The Opening Ceremony began with a welcoming remark by Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Anis Faudzulaini binti Haji Dzulkiflee, acting Director General of Education, whom highlighted that it is the duty of policy makers and educators to ensure that children are given every opportunity to become well-informed, responsible citizens that when faced with making decisions, the children will ask themselves how their actions will affect themselves, other people and their surroundings.
Dr Mee Young Choi, Head of Education at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Jakarta Office, also delivered a welcoming remark. She stated that ESD is one of the strategic entry points to achieve Target 4.7 of SDG4, that is, to ensure all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development. She went on to call for the five Cluster Countries to collaborate together to attain the SDG 4 goals.

In the opening speech by the Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Yang Mulia Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin indicated how the Ministry of Education Brunei Darussalam envisions the need and significance to formulate a national framework for SDG4 to ensure that the most appropriate plan-of-action to implement and monitor the SDG4, The national framework guideline will have a useful mechanism to plan towards UNESCO Education 2030 , thus focusing on the right resources and strategies needed to implement actions and programmes.
The three-day event is co-hosted by the Ministry of Education, Brunei Darussalam and UNESCO Jakarta Office, and is attended by representatives from UNESCO Jakarta Office and UNESCO Bangkok Office as well as representatives from the five Cluster Countries under the purview of the UNESCO Jakarta Office: Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Timor-Leste. Also attending the three days event are Directors and Senior Officers from the Ministry of Education, Brunei Economic Development Board Department and Islamic Religious Studies Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs.
This morning's opening ceremony was also attended by Yang Mulia Dr Chin Wei Keh, acting Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), Yang Mulia Awang Aliuddin bin Haji Abd Rahman, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education) Ministry of Education and senior officers from the Ministry of Education.
