Al-Qur’an Memorisation Competition Draws In 50 Student with Special Needs
In conjunction with the holy month of Ramadhan, the Special Education Unit under the Ministry of Education held a Al-Qur’an Memorisation Competition for all secondary students with special needs. The Al-Qur’an Memorisation Competition was held on Saturday, 18th May and sets out to:
a. make the recitation of the Surah Al-Fatihah and the Verses an integral part of students’ daily routines thus instilling the love of the Al-Qur’an.
b. support Inclusive Education practices by ensuring that students with special needs are given equal opportunities to master the reading of the Verses of the Al-Qur’an.
c. maximise the potential of students with special needs in the memorisation of passages or possess talent towards becoming Qari or Qari’ah.
d. foster and enhance religious awareness and understanding by reading Verses from the Al-Qur’an.
The Competition was held at the Tarbiyyah Hall of the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB). Present as the Guest of Honour was Yang Mulia, Awang Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education. Also in attendance were Directors from the Ministry of Education, Senior Officials, Principals, parents of the participants and officers from the Special Education Unit.
The event started with the Doa Selamat read by Awang Abdul Munim bin Abdullah Mutalif, a year 11 student from the Pre-Vocational programme. This was followed by the recital of the Surah Al Fajr by Md Hakim Imanuddin bin Asirwah, a student with visual impairment who was also the former champion of the 2017 Al-Qur’an Memorisation Competition.
This year 15 students were successful in entering the final round. All 15 finalists took center stage in sequence to showcase their memorisation skills of their respective Al-Qur’an Verses. The finalists, consisting of 4 boys and 3 girls under secondary mainstream, as well as 4 boys and 4 girls from the secondary Pre-Vocational Programme were selected from a total of 50 participants representing various secondary schools across the 4 districts.
Under the mainstream category, Eddy Iswanndy Ismail bin Imran from Sekolah Menengah Masin emerged as Champion in the Boys Category while Izzah Zuhairah binti Yahya from Sekolah Menengah Hasan Bangar was the Champion in the Girls Category. Both champions received a trophy, cash of $100 and a Certificate of Participation. Second place was awarded to Md Akram Rahmani Rafiuddin bin Hj Roslan from Sekolah Menengah Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam and Fatin Hanani binti Huzri from Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Husain. They each received a trophy, cash $80 and a Certificate of Participation. The third place was awarded to Danial Akmal bin Yantiee Shahmaddey from Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam and Siti Noorsyahirah Naqibah @ Siti Nurulfitri binti Awg Zakaria from Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri. They each received a trophy, cash $60 and a Certificate of Participation. A consolation prize of $40 including a Certificate of Participation was awarded to Md Haziq Zul Danish bin Hj Saifullizan from Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Datu Seri Maharaja.
For participants under the Pre-Vocational Programme, Ampuan Md Aiman Syahmi bin Ampuan Hj Md Sahrol Amiruddin from Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Hasan emerged as Champion in the Boys Category while Nurul Aziqah binti Abdullah Md Sharin from Sekolah Menengah Sufri Bolkiah was the Champion in the Girls Category. Both Champions received a trophy, cash of $100 and a Certificate of Participation. Grabbing second place were Awg Md Nasran Nasrullah bin Hj Hamdi from Sekolah Menengah Katok and Nurul Afiqah binti Irwan from Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna. They each received a trophy, cash $80 and a Certificate of Participation. The third place was awarded to Awg Md Asmadi bin Abdullah Mahadi from Sekolah Menengah Lambak Kiri and Ameerah Syaheerah binti Zulkiflee from Sekolah Menengah Rimba. They received a trophy, cash $60 and a Certificate of Participation. A consolation prize of $40 including a Certificate of Participation was awarded to Awg Rizqi Rahim bin Jaffri from Sekolah Menengah Berakas and Siti Hannah Haziqah binti Hj Md Sahrol from Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Hasan.
This is the third time the Special Education Unit has organised the Al-Qur’an Memorisation Competition. According to Dr. Mona Aliana Binti Dato Paduka Awang Haji Alimin, Acting Deputy Head of Special Education Unit and deputy Chairperson of the Organising Committee, The competition was held to ensure that students with special needs are given equal opportunities to master their skills in Al-Quran recitation.
She also went on to say that since it was first introduced in 2017, the competition has opened up more doors for students with special needs, particularly for 4 students with visual impairment who have been accepted to further their studies at the Institute Tahfiz Al-Qur’an Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
