CURRICULUM
DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
Units
The Curriculum Development Department comprises the following units:
1. THE EVALUATION AND TEACHERS' ORIENTATION UNIT (UPL)
The functions of the Evaluation and Teachers' Orientation Unit are:
To revise and evaluate the curriculum programmes and materials
inclusive of media, education materials from time to time and to furnish reports on them
for further action;
- to carry out quality control of teaching and learning materials prepared by the CDD;
- to procure, evaluate and recommend suitable books from samples issued by local or
foreign publishers/suppliers;
- to submit book recommendations to respective subject and textbook committee and to
prepare the Lists of Approved Text, Supplementary and Reference Books in accordance with
the committee's recommendation;
- to co-ordinate for training workshops organised by the CDD, and
- to co-operate with other units within the CDD in the implementation of curriculum
activities and programmes.
2. THE MEDIA AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE UNIT (UMP)
The functions of the Media and Educational Resource Unit are:
- to study, design and modify teaching and learning aids in various formats according to
curriculum needs;
- to produce educational programmes on audio or video cassette and to prepare printed
materials such as charts, flash cards, slides, etc. to help teachers in their classroom
teaching;
- to provide resource materials as required by various units of the CDD;
- to provide Media/Library services to other units in the CDD and to give advice and
guidance to teachers on the Organisation and the running of the school library,
- to preview and select suitable outside programmes and to edit, adapt, dub and prepare
subtitles and translation (if necessary); to co-operate with other units in the CDD in
implementing programmes and activities; and
- to undertake coverage of educational programmes and documentation on such matters as
curriculum changes, implementation of education policy and other related extra curricular
activities for dissemination to teachers and the public.
The Media and Educational Resource Unit comprises the following
sub-units:
- Educational Media;
- Educational Resource-
- Graphics and Illustration, and
- Technical Operations.
3. THE PUBLICATION UNIT (UPN)
The functions of the Publication Unit are:
to arrange for the publication of textbooks, supplementary reading
materials, pamphlets, educational journals, printed materials cards and other teaching
aids;
to co-ordinate and manage the printing and distribution of textbooks,
workbooks, syllabuses and other printed teaching and learning materials-,
to adapt textbooks from overseas (in cooperation with the relevant
publishers) for use in Brunei Darussalam and to translate them if necessary, based on the
recommendations of officers in the School Curriculum Units,
to ensure adequate supply of approved books to primary and secondary
schools throughout the country-,
to co-operate with other units within the CDD in matters regarding the
publication and the use of textbooks as well as other teaching and learning materials; and
to liaise with other departments involved in the publication of books
which might be suitable for reading and reference.
4. THE GENERAL ADMINISTRATION UNIT (UPD)
The functions of the General Administration Unit are:
to ensure the premises of the department is maintained in good repair;
to process all purchases and payment of goods,
to co-ordinate all general administrative requests, applications for
officers and staff of the CDD;
to collate the results of all performance appraisals of all the staff
officers of the CDD;
to liaise with the Transport Unit of the Ministry of Education in order
to arrange for transport for officers conducting school-base workshops and school visits;
and
to co-ordinate the supply of office machinery/furniture from the
relevant authorities.
5. THE SPECIAL PROJECT UNIT
This Unit is responsible for the implementation of the
Thinking Skills project in Lower Secondary Schools.
The Thinking Skills Project was first piloted in six schools in 1993 at
the Lower Secondary One Level. It is based on the concept that thinking could be taught
directly as a skill. Students are taught in the use of such thinking tools:
PMI (Plus, Minus and Interesting);
CAF (Consider All Factors);
RULES;
C&S (Consequences & Sequels
AGO (Aims, Goals, Objectives)
PLANNING;
FIP (First Important Priorities
APC (Alternatives, Possibilities, Choices);
DECISIONS; and
OPV (Other People's Views)
These tools above would assist them to process available information
and help, expand their thinking with a view to arrive at an informed decision.
The School Curriculum Units provide support services for the CDD in the
subject areas taught in schools in Brunei Darussalam.
These units are responsible for the development and implementation 'of
the Primary and secondary school curricula. Amongst others the units concerned
Perform the following functions:
I prepare curriculum materials such as syllabuses, teachers'
guides,textbooks, workbooks, teaching and learning aids for use in schools;
2. trial and evaluate various programmes and curriculum materials
produced
3. improve programmes and curriculum materials based on research
finding and evaluation;
4. Review, evaluate and recommend basic textbooks, supplementary and
reference books and other teaching and learning materials for use in schools;
5. give guidance, orientation and training in the use of
curriculum materials produced;
6. prepare reports on school visits; and
7. co-operate with other units in the CDD in implementing various
curriculum activities.

Malay Islamic Monarchy (Primary and Secondary).
4. SCIENCE AND COMPUTER STUDIES:
Primary Science;
Lower Secondary Science;
Biology;
Chemistry;
Physics;
Combined Science;
Agriculture; and
Computer Studies.
5. SOCIAL STUDIES:
History;
Geography;
Economics;
Commerce / Commercial Studies; and
Principles of Accounts.
6. MATHEMATICS:
Primary Mathematics;
Secondary Mathematics; and
Additional Mathematics.
7. VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL STUDIES:
Home Science;
Woodwork;
Metalwork; and
Technical Drawing.
Each subject and textbooks committee consists of experienced teachers,
,curriculum officers as well as officers from various departments and higher educational
institutions of the Ministry of Education and is normally chaired by ,,head of unit (CDD)
or a senior curriculum officer. The functions and responsibilities are basically advisory
in nature and include:
1. formulation and evaluation of primary and secondary school
syllabuses;
2. selection of suitable basic texts, supplementary and reference books
for a subjects; and
3. preparation of teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks,
teachers guides and syllabus guides. |
