Continuing Education The Continuing Education Section of the Department of Technical Education, formerly known as Adult Education Classes, previously operated under the Department of Schools. It is charged with the responsibility of organising courses for working adults and school leavers. Initially the purpose of Continuing Education was to eradicate illiteracy. The emphasis now has shifted towards the improvement of general education, the acquisition of vocational and technical skills and the provision of enrichment programmes for adults as part of their leisure activities and lifelong learning. The Section is now running various programmes from home economics for adults to academic classes for school leavers. Table 5 shows the population of students registered in various programmes for the year 1998 and the number of part-time teachers involved in the delivery of the programmes.
The Continuing Education Section also addresses the needs of disabled children and rehabilitation centres. In 1998 the Section funded the organisation of various classes as shown in Table 6.
