         Student Population

The total number of students studying at VTE institutions (excluding the Continuing Education Section) in 1999 was 2342, of whom 1065 (45%) were female (see Table 4).  The number of students enrolled in technician level programmes was 1315, of whom 548 (42%) were female,  and 630 students were in the craft-level courses, of whom 224 (36%) were  female.  There were more female students in technician level programmes than in the craft level programmes, implying that many female students have acquired good academic qualifications which make them eligible  to opt for higher level courses. This also implies that equal opportunity in VTE  is not an issue in Brunei Darussalam.

While VTE programmes are mainly designed to cater for the needs of local students, a limited number of places are available for Bruneian scholarship recipients from OIC and Commonwealth Countries. Currently a few of them are studying at ITB and the Nursing College.

The student population in Table 4 shows that MTSSR and MKJB are responsible for producing the bulk of technical education graduates in Brunei. ITB, however, has been the sole producer of graduates at higher technician or higher diploma level.

The yearly production of VTE graduates from all disciplines and programme levels is about 1300.  In the next 10 years, assuming the capacity of VTE institutions does not change, the total number of graduates will be 13,000. Comparing this figure with the projected manpower requirements in the year 2011, about 93,300 for low growth and 148,300 for high growth (Economic Planning Unit - manpower projection 1991-2011), VTE institutions will be able to produce 14% of the projected manpower required for low growth or 8.7% for high growth. Therefore, the HRD capacity of VTE will have to be increased to meet the manpower demands of the country.
