SPECIAL EDUCATION UNIT
Aims, Functions & Responsibilities
AIMS
The Special Education Unit’s main aim is
to assist in the planning, coordinating and implementing Special
Education Programmes in schools for children with special
educational needs.
The SEU’s objectives, functions and
responsibilities are:

To identify children with special
needs
-
To establish a training programme in
special education for primary and secondary teachers
-
To increase teacher and school
personnel awareness about children with special needs
-
To establish educational services for
children with special needs within the inclusive schools system
-
To increase the understanding of
parents and the public in general about children with special
needs
-
To develop resources for children with
special needs
-
To keep a national data bank on
children with special needs
-
To develop specific primary and
secondary programmes, as well as programmes in special education
for school staff
-
To evaluate the effectiveness of the
programmes
-
To initiate and carry out research in
special education and in education in general
-
To make short and long term plans and
implement appropriate services within the school system
-
To liaise with national and
international agencies in order to provide the most effective
services to children with special needs
-
To prepare guidelines and assist in
formulating policies for the successful implementation of
special educational services
Population served:
- Learners with special
educational needs in government and non-government schools;
- Teachers in government and non-government schools;
- Parents;
- Leaders in Education; and
- The Community
