SEAMEO VOCTECH is currently conducting a significant Regional Training Programme on “Measuring the Readiness of Education Institutions for Industry 4.0 using the SMART Education Readiness Index (SERI) Framework.” The training has attracted over 18 participants from 11 SEAMEO member countries, consisting of a three-day online workshop from 12th to 14th August, followed by a five-day on-site training session at the SEAMEO VOCTECH Regional Centre in Brunei from 19th -23rd August.

In response to the need for government and industry stakeholders to formulate appropriate policies and strategies to meet Industry 4.0 requirements, the training workshop has been designed to guide participants through the development of an assessment matrix to evaluate the readiness of TVET institutions for Industry 4.0, as well as to discuss the improvement and application of this matrix at both national and institutional levels. A key highlight of the programme was the involvement of Dr. Chin Wei Keh, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Higher Education at Brunei's Ministry of Education, who served as a guest facilitator during the online session.

Dr. Chin led a sharing session on the SERI framework, offering participants insights into the potential national application of the framework in Brunei. He also engaged in a dialogue with regional participants, discussing potential challenges in utilising the index and strategies for effectively advocating its implementation within their
respective institutions and governments.

During the session, Dr. Chin remarked, “The SERI framework provides objective data that can help devise targeted responses for governments and institutions.” He also emphasised the critical role of industry support and the importance of engaging teachers and management in the education sector to ensure the framework's seamless integration into daily practices.

Among other points, Dr Chin also underscores the importance of industry support and to practice engaging with educators in the context of education sector, to ensure ease of incorporating the framework in their daily practice”.

The online portion of the regional training programme has concluded on 14 August and participants are set to reconvene for the on-site segment, scheduled for August 19-23 at the SEAMEO VOCTECH Centre in Brunei.
