STEP Environment Camp 15 – 19 November 2021

STEP Environment Camp 2021 is an annual camp organised by the Temasek Foundation and National University Singapore since 2013. The camp which was held from 15 to 19 November 2021 was attended by 20 teams of students aged 17 to 19 years old from 10 countries in the Asian region including Brunei Darussalam.

 

The camp aims to encourage environmental stewardship among Asian youth. During the camp, the participants were given the opportunity to participate in lectures, hands-on workshops and virtual field trips. Participants also had the opportunity to produce posters as well as essays and presented on topics built around environmental themes, covering scientific inquiry and field ecology.

 

Brunei Darussalam was represented by five students; Amal Afiqah binti Awang Haji Rusali from Pusat Tingkatan Enam Sengkurong; Dk. Syifrah Arifah binti Pg. Haji Isa from Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah; Siti Aisyah binti Haji Abdul Jalal from Pusat Tingkatan Enam Meragang; Syafiq Shahnizam bin Mohd. Ridhwan Zul Hisyam from Pusat Tingkatan Enam Tutong and Wong Ru Kait from Pusat Tingkatan Enam Belait. The students were guided by Nurul Fathiah Bazilah binti Haji Ibrahim, Education officer, Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre, Ministry of Education.

 

The students have won Second Place for the Environment Poster Award, Third Place in Environment Paper Award and Third Place in the Environment Presentation Award during the camp. The students also produced a poster and a research essay entitled "Peatlands: A Dying Gem". In addition, they also teamed up with students of NUS High School, Singapore, for the presentation of a project entitled "The Black Gold of the Forest" which covered the conservation of a mangrove species in Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.

Participants are expected to share their expriences with peers in their respective schools to expose mpre green and eco-friendly practices among youth.

STEP ENVIRONMENT CAMP

15 – 19 NOVEMBER 2021

 

STEP Environment Camp 2021 ialah perkhemahan yang dijalankan setiap tahun mulai 2013 yang dianjurkan oleh Temasek Foundation dan National University Singapore.  Perkhemahan yang bermula dari 15 hingga 19 November 2021 ini disertai oleh 20 buah kumpulan pelajar berumur 17 hingga 19 tahun daripada 10 buah negara Asia termasuk Negara Brunei Darussalam. 

 

Perkhemahan ini bertujuan untuk menggalakkan penjagaan alam sekitar di kalangan belia Asia. Sepanjang perkemahan tersebut, peserta berpeluang untuk mengikuti aktiviti kuliah (lecture), bengkel amali (hands-on workshops) dan lawatan secara maya (virtual field trips). Peserta juga berkesempatan untuk menghasilkan poster serta esei dan membuat pembentangan yang meliputi tema alam sekitar, penyelidikan saintifik (scientific inquiry) dan field ecology.

 

Seramai lima orang pelajar telah mewakili Negara Brunei Darussalam ke perkhemahan secara maya ini. Mereka ialah Amal Afiqah binti Awang Haji Rusali dari Pusat Tingkatan Enam Sengkurong, Dk. Syifrah Arifah binti Pg. Haji Isa dari Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Siti Aisyah binti Haji Abdul Jalal dari Pusat Tingkatan Enam Meragang, Syafiq Shahnizam bin Mohd. Ridhwan Zul Hisyam dari Pusat Tingkatan Enam Tutong dan Wong Ru Kait dari Pusat Tingkatan Enam Belait. Pelajar-pelajar tersebut telah dibimbing oleh Nurul Fathiah Bazilah binti Haji Ibrahim, Pegawai Pelajaran, Pusat Kerjasama Sains, Teknologi dan Alam Sekitar (STEP), Kementerian Pendidikan.

 

Pelajar-pelajar tersebut telah berjaya memenangi Tempat Kedua bagi Anugerah Environment Poster, Tempat Ketiga bagi Anugerah Environment Paper dan Tempat Ketiga bagi Anugerah Environment Presentation semasa perkhemahan. Para pelajar juga telah menghasilkan sebuah poster dan sebuah esei penyelidikan yang bertajuk "Peatlands: A Dying Gem".  Di samping itu, mereka juga bergabung dengan pelajar-pelajar NUS High School, Singapura, bagi pembentangan projek yang bertajuk "The Black Gold of the Forest" mengenai dengan pemeliharaan spesis bakau di Brunei Darussalam dan Singapura.

 

Para peserta adalah diharapkan untuk mengongsikan pengalaman mereka dengan rakan-rakan di sekolah masing-masing untuk mendedahkan amalan hijau di kalangan belia.
