BRUNEI DARUSSALAM’S PARTICIPATION IN
THE APEC STEM YOUNG RESEARCHERS FORUM IN THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA

BERAKAS – The Ministry of Education, through the CentrE for the Development of Gifted and Talented Education (EDGE), Department of Special Education, has coordinated the participation of one Year 13 student and an accompanying officer to attend the APEC STEM Young Researchers Forum, which will be held from 10 to 15 August 2026 at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), as well as in Sacheon and Tongyeong, Republic of Korea.
Present at Brunei International Airport to bid farewell to the delegation were Yang Mulia Hajah Nor Amy Hamimah binti Haji Matamit, Head of the Educational Psychology Services, Department of Special Education, and Yang Mulia Pengiran Omar bin Pengiran Haji Salleh, Head of the Administration Division, Department of Special Education.
Awang Lau Wei Rong, a student from Pusat Tingkatan Enam Belait, was selected to participate in the forum following a thorough and competitive evaluation process by the organiser, based on his participation in the 17th APEC Mentoring Research Activity (APEC MRA), which has been conducted online since January 2026. Throughout the forum, the student will be accompanied by Awang Yahuda bin Gelawat, Education Officer from the Department of Special Education, Ministry of Education.
The forum aims to foster the next generation of APEC STEM researchers by providing opportunities for collaboration research, academic exchange, and laboratory-based research experiences, while building a sustainable network for future APEC scientific collaboration.
Throughout the forum, the student and the accompanying officer will participate in a range of activities organised by the host, including co-research idea pitching, research proposal presentation and feedback sessions, as well as technical visits to the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL), Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. (Sacheon), and the Gyeongsangnam-do Fisheries Resources Research Institute (Tongyeong).
The APEC STEM Young Researchers Forum is a continuation of the 17th APEC Mentoring Research Activity (APEC MRA). The forum is organised by the APEC Mentoring Center for the Gifted in Science (AMGS) and the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, Republic of Korea. The forum is supported by the Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Kyungnam University, the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC), and the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH).
In addition to the Brunei Darussalam delegation coordinated by the Ministry of Education, the organiser also invited Dayang Lee Jing Jing, an EDGE alumna and a sixth form graduate of Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan, to participate in the forum. She won the top award for the Award for Future STEM Leader during the 2025 APEC Youth STEM Conference.

BERAKAS – Kementerian Pendidikan melalui Pusat Perkembangan Pendidikan Cerdas Pintar dan Berbakat (EDGE), Jabatan Pendidikan Khas telah menyelaras penyertaan seorang pelajar Tahun 13 bersama seorang pegawai pengiring bagi menghadiri APEC STEM Young Researchers Forum yang akan diadakan pada 10 hingga 15 Ogos 2026 di Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) serta Sacheon dan Tongyeong, Republik Korea.
Hadir di Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Brunei untuk mengucapkan selamat belayar kepada para delegasi ialah Yang Mulia Hajah Nor Amy Hamimah binti Haji Matamit, Ketua Perkhidmatan Psikologi Pendidikan, Jabatan Pendidikan Khas dan Yang Mulia Pengiran Omar bin Pengiran Haji Salleh, Ketua Bahagian Pentadbiran, Jabatan Pendidikan Khas.
Awang Lau Wei Rong, pelajar dari Pusat Tingkatan Belait, telah dipilih untuk menyertai forum berkenaan berdasarkan pemilihan yang dibuat oleh pihak penganjur melalui proses penilaian yang teliti dan kompetitif, susulan penyertaan beliau dalam The 17th APEC Mentoring Research Activity (APEC MRA) yang telah dikendalikan secara dalam talian sejak Januari 2026. Sepanjang penyertaan ke forum tersebut, beliau akan diiringi oleh Awang Yahuda bin Gelawat, Pegawai Pelajaran dari Jabatan Pendidikan Khas, Kementerian Pendidikan.
Forum ini bertujuan untuk melahirkan generasi penyelidik STEM APEC melalui penyediaan peluang menjalankan penyelidikan secara kolaboratif, pertukaran akademik, serta pengalaman penyelidikan berasaskan makmal. Di samping itu, forum ini turut bertujuan untuk membina rangkaian kerjasama yang mampan bagi memperkukuh kerjasama saintifik dalam kalangan ekonomi APEC pada masa hadapan.
Semasa forum, pelajar dan pegawai pengiring akan berpeluang menyertai pelbagai aktiviti yang disediakan oleh pihak penganjur, antaranya co-research idea pitching, research proposal presentation and feedback, serta lawatan ke POHANG Accelerator Laboratory, Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd (Sacheon) dan Gyeongsangnam-do Fisheries Resources Research Institute (Tongyeong).
APEC STEM Young Researchers Forum merupakan kesinambungan kepada The 17th APEC Mentoring Research Activity (The 17th APEC MRA). Forum ini dianjurkan oleh APEC Mentoring Center for the Gifted in Science (AMGS) dan ASIA Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) yang dihoskan oleh Ministry of Science and ICT, Republik Korea. Forum ini dibiayai oleh Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Kyungnam University, National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC) dan Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH).
Selain penyertaan delegasi Negara Brunei Darussalam yang diselaras oleh Kementerian Pendidikan, pihak penganjur turut menjemput seorang Alumni EDGE yang juga merupakan lepasan Tingkatan Enam dari Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan, iaitu Dayang Lee Jing Jing, untuk menyertai forum berkenaan. Beliau telah memenangi anugerah teratas bagi Award for Future STEM Leader semasa 2025 APEC Youth STEM Conference.
