Students With Special Needs Shines In Unified Bocce National Tournament

Thursday, 1 August 2019 - Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education today held a closing ceremony for the Unified Bocce tournament which was organised for students with special needs from all government secondary schools nationwide. The event took place at the Multipurpose Hall, Hassanal Bolkiah Sport Complex, Berakas. 


Present as guest of honour at the event was Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Anis Faudzulani binti Haji Dzulkiflee, Acting Director General of Education at the Ministry of Education. 


Held from 31st July until 1st August, the tournament saw a total of 26 secondary schools sending their best team of four students to compete against other teams in the inaugural event, whereby each school team consists of three students with special needs and one regular student as their representing team. This is to enable the students to foster friendship and understanding on the value of difference and diversity. About 104 students were seen participating in the Bocce tournament totalling to 26 teams altogether. 


Today’s semi-final saw four teams contending for their spot in the finals but only two teams were successful in entering the final round. The culmination of the event highlighted 4 teams as the overall victors. 


The team representing Maktab Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) secured first place and was awarded with the gold medal. As champion, they took home the Unified Bocce Trophy. Emerging as runner-up to receive the silver medal was Sekolah Menengah Masin while Sekolah Menengah Rimba and Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Ali took home the bronze medal. The guest of honour presented the medals to all 4 winning teams including Consolation prizes to the other participating teams. The guest of honour also presented the trophy for the overall best player for this year’s tournament to Awang Redwan bin Abdul Rahman from Sekolah Menengah Rimba.

The Unified Bocce National Tournament was organised by the Special Education Unit with the support from the Department of Co-Curriculum Education, Ministry of Education and Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam. The tournament was hosted in order to create and nurture interests, as well as promote the gifts and talents of all students, especially students with special needs to venture into the sport of Bocce and other sports in general. The Special Education Unit thanked all parties concern including the teachers who gave their full support in training the students, as well as the volunteers who played a major role in the smooth running of the national tournament.

Also present at the event were Directors and officers from the Special Education Unit and Department of Co-Curriculum Education; principals and teachers from the 26 participating secondary schools and representatives from Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam and First Aid Support Team Brunei.

Khamis, 1 Ogos 2019 - Unit Pendidikan Khas, Kementerian Pendidikan pada petang tadi telah mengadakan acara penutup bagi Kejohanan Unified Bocce Sekolah-sekolah Menengah Senegara bertempat di Dewan Serbaguna, Kompleks Sukan Negara Hassanal Bolkiah, Berakas. 

Hadir selaku tetamu kehormat ialah Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Anis Faudzulani binti Haji Dzulkiflee, Pemangku Ketua Pengarah Pendidikan di Kementerian Pendidikan.

Kejohanan tersebut yang berlangsung pada 31 Julai hingga 1 Ogos 2019 ini menyaksikan sejumlah 26 buah sekolah menengah kerajaan bersaing dalam Kejohanan yang julung-julungnya diadakan. Setiap sekolah menghantar pasukan terbaik mereka iaitu seramai empat orang pelajar sepasukan yang terdiri daripada tiga orang pelajar berkeperluan khas dan seorang pelajar dalam aliran biasa. Ini merupakan usaha untuk memupuk persahabatan dan pemahaman tentang nilai perbezaan dan kepelbagaian dikalangan pelajar-pelajar. Sebanyak 26 pasukan yang menyertai pertandingan tersebut yang merangkumi sekitar 104 orang pelajar.

Sebanyak empat pasukan bersaing untuk mendapatkan tempat di peringkat akhir tetapi hanya dua pasukan sahaja berjaya mara ke pusingan akhir. Empat pasukan berjaya sebagai pemenang keseluruhan. 

Pasukan yang mewakili Maktab Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) mendapat tempat pertama dan dianugerahkan dengan pingat emas. Sebagai juara, mereka turut membawa pulang piala pusingan ‘Unified Bocce’. Sekolah Menengah Masin muncul sebagai naib juara dan menerima pingat perak, sementara Sekolah Menengah Rimba dan Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Ali mendapat tempat ketiga dan membawa pulang pingat gangsa. Pingat-pingat kejohanan Bocce dan hadiah-hadiah saguhati disampaikan oleh Tetamu kehormat majlis yang juga turut menyampaikan piala kepada pemain terbaik keseluruhan bagi kejohanan tahun ini Awang Redwan bin Abdul Rahman dari Sekolah Menengah Rimba.   


Kejohanan Unified Bocce Sekolah-sekolah Menengah Senegara dianjurkan oleh Unit Pendidikan Khas dengan kerjasama Jabatan Pendidikan Ko-Kurikulum, Kementerian Pendidikan dan Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam. Kejohanan ini dianjurkan untuk mewujudkan dan memupuk minat, serta mempromosikan bakat semua pelajar, terutama sekali pelajar berkeperluan khas untuk menceburi sukan Bocce dan sukan lain secara umum. Bagi kejohanan ini, Unit Pendidikan Khas mengucapkan terima kasih kepada semua pihak yang berkaitan termasuk guru-guru yang memberikan sokongan penuh mereka dalam melatih para pelajar, serta sukarelawan yang memainkan peranan utama dalam sama-sama melancarkan acara kejohanan ini.  


Turut hadir ialah ketua-ketua jabatan, pegawai-pegawai dari Unit Pendidikan Khas dan Jabatan Pendidikan Kurikulum; pengetua-pengetua dan guru-guru dari 26 buah sekolah menengah yang mengambil bahagian dan wakil dari ‘Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam’ (SOBD) dan persatuan First Aid Support Team Brunei.
