60 foreign coaches to train local Maths, English teachers

SIXTY international coaches will train local teachers to improve their English language and Mathematics teaching skills following the signing of a three-year consultancy agreement.

The Ministry of Education yesterday inked the contract with CfBT Education Services (B) and its parent organisation, Education Development Trust.

Permanent Secretary (Core Education) Dr Hjh Romaizah Hj Md Salleh said the international coaches will be deployed to primary and lower secondary schools next month, along with literacy and numeracy experts.

The coaches will train new and existing local teachers to strengthen their literacy and numeracy teaching skills as well as raise literacy and numeracy standards among schoolchildren in Brunei, she said during the signing ceremony yesterday.

The Ministry of Education in a statement said the 60 international coaches will be working alongside more than 100 local coaches to improve the performance of pupils in the core subjects of English and Mathematics.

The ministry said the agreement will deliver systemic improvements in the quality of literacy and numeracy teaching in Brunei schools.

The project will also provide expert support for the recruitment and performance management of international staff, including a human resource head and two professional development experts in literacy and numeracy teaching and learning practices, it added.

The ministry said support in the design, management and monitoring of Maths and literacy reform programmes will also be provided.

Under the agreement, there will be mentoring and work shadowing opportunities for Ministry of Education officers, human resources personnel, local graduates and local coaches.

Dr Hjh Romaizah said the project is expected to help the ministry achieve its key performance indicators.

Signing the contract for MoE was Dr Hjh Romaizah, while Director Hj Sulaiman Hj Ahai represented CfBT Education Services Brunei.

Present as guest of honour was Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman.

Also in attendance were British High Commissioner to Brunei David Campbell, Deputy Minister of Education Pg Dato Paduka Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar and Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) Dr Hj Junaidi Hj Abd Rahman.
