Yang Mulia Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Yusoff bin Haji Awang Ismail, the Deputy Minister of Education, attended the 1st Joint-Working Group Meeting between Brunei Darussalam and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Education and Training headquarters in Hanoi, Vietnam, and was co-chaired by the Deputy Minister of Education of Brunei Darussalam together with Dr. Bui Van Ga, the Vice Minister of Education and Training of Vietnam.
This inaugural Joint-Working Group meeting is the outcome of the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by both countries in Brunei Darussalam on the 9th of April 2014. It is through this JWG Meeting, education ties between the two countries will be strengthened in order to bring about mutual benefit to both countries. Among the potential areas of cooperation and collaboration discussed include projects on English Language, Mathematics, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training.
The Deputy Minister shared Brunei Darussalam’s current educational development especially the transformation of the existing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) into a newly established Institute Brunei Technical Education (IBTE), a system that builds on the educational foundation under SPN-21 and positioned as a new pathway in post-secondary education for school leavers, helps build a better educated and skilled manpower workforce and attract as well as equip school leavers for jobs and careers in industries.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted other current developments in the Brunei Darussalam’s National Education System for the 21st Century (SPN21) where various programmes have been initiated to further improve the education system in the country namely the progress made in areas of literacy and numeracy; leadership development; the whole school ICT development (WSID) in Brunei schools; the newly launched of the Brunei Teachers’ Standard (BTS) and others.
During the meeting, agreement was reached on a number of project proposals which are to be implemented over the next 2 years. Some of these projects include exchange programmes of both students and teachers; linkages and exchanges on science, technology, engineering and mathematics education; and the exchange of information and materials on education experience, teaching and learning.
Besides the meeting, the Deputy Minister and delegation also had the opportunity to visit the Hanoi University of Industry and the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted organized by the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training.
Among those accompanying the Deputy Minister of Education are the Permanent Secretary for Core Education, Dr Haji Junaidi bin Haji Abd Rahman and several officers from the Ministry of Education.
