Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) was established by the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Mahrum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam during Isra Mikraj ceremony on the 27 Rejab 1435 Hijrah / 27th May 2014. IBTE's role is to replace the responsibilities mandated to the Department of Technical Education. At present, IBTE operates as an institute under the Ministry of Education with its own Board of Governors. The rationale for the establishment of IBTE is to restructure the technical education system to be more responsive and relevant to the nation’s needs. IBTE is fully committed to support to the government's agenda in making Brunei Darussalam a nation that has educated and highly skilled people in addition to being economically dynamic as well as resilient thereby achieving the high quality standard of living which aligned with Vision Brunei 2035.

IBTE is a post-secondary education institution which offers Highest National Technical Education Certificate (HNTec) and National Technical Education Certificate (NTec). The courses are categorised into 7 clusters such as agrotechnology and applied sciences, maritime, business and financial services, hospitality and tourism services, energy and engineering, building technological services, electronics and information technology. The programs offered by IBTE are based on industry needs that can produce competence and job ready graduates that meet the industry requirements. In addition, IBTE also offers continuing education and training in the form of short-courses for public who wish to improve their skills and academic achievement through lifelong learning.

IBTE is highly committed and is always proactive in supporting various government initiatives. This is through collaboration with the industries to innovate teaching and learning with the aspiration to produce competent workforce with entrepreneurial mindset whose academic and skills are accredited by industries and are able to compete in the job market.
